The Frome Five Minute Festival
was the idea of the late Stan Smith a Chairman of the Frome & District Ciné Club. Stan loved going to the Weymouth Clubs Penny Cup which at the time was held in the local newspapers social club. This produced a wonderfully friendly atmosphere and he wanted that to be the aim of our Festival too. We think that we have achieved that. It is a regular date for movie makers from Orpington to Bristol. Entries were received last year as far apart as Scotland, Spain and Australia.
The competition started as a local affair in 1991. Originally there was only one rule, that the entry should not exceed five minutes running time. Now we have fourteen.
The first problem we met with was when we started receiving video entries. Entrants would send us tapes with several productions on them with instructions (sometimes) as to where their entry was on the tape. This was not on, especially as the competition was originally live, so we said only one production per tape. Then we received an entry which only had one production on it but there was two different versions.
For 2003 the competition was divided into categories which includes a youth section. This has helped us with the judging and arranging the programme. We get a varied selection of entries each year. In 2006 we had another wonderful selection of wildlife films (natural history).
We’ve allowed entries on Mini-DV for a couple of years now. This has caused us some compatibility problems, but we’ve managed to find something to play them on. For 2007 we allowed DVD-R and VCD entries for the first time. The picture quality of the VCD entries was much better than we expected it to be.
2008 was our fourth year at the St. Catharine’s Hall in Park Road, Frome. We moved back to Frome because our previous venue did not have disabled access and being a listed building was unable to provide it. Although we’ve lost the wonderful catering provided by previous venue, we are gaining a reputation for putting on a good spread.
